Fake Meat (and Side Dish Spaghetti)

A couple months ago Desmond brought me an overturned frisbee/platter heaped with plastic farm animals.  "Here Mommy, soy chicken.  Soy piggy."To my horror, he seems to have a pretty matter-of-fact, three-year-old understanding of what meat is.  He gets it.

CNN: Dog Meat

CNN: China might ban dog meat I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – Anyone who refuses to eat dog or cat because it is “cruel” and yet will happily take a bite out of cow or pig, is a hypocrite. Cruelty is cruelty and suffering is suffering, regardless of how cute and adorable an animal is.

7 Ways to the Simple Life

One of my favourite blogs is Leo Babauta’s Zen Habits. It’s simple, to the point, and best of all, packed full of useful information and insights that help you to ponder and, at times, put things into action.

Velvet Teddy Bear Is A Vegan

I’m always a fan of veganism being presented as a sensible, attainable alternative to the Standard American Diet; as opposed to, y’know, a fringe set of eating rules developed by obsessive leftists looking to overthrow the status quo - as the media is often guilty of. Season Two American Idol Winner Ruben Studdard does just that, talking veganism like it ain’t no thang.

Miso Soup and Mango Lassi

The weather has been so incredible here in Asheville. Mid- to high-60’s, sunny, happy. I feel rejuvenated after that long, snowy winter! With the sun shining so brightly, I was craving something light for lunch. I didn’t have anything to make a salad, so I settled on some instant red miso soup and the mango lassi from Ani’s Raw Food Kitchen.

Chef Makes Cheese from Wife's Breast Milk

I laughed at the following, especially considering my satirical essay, "The Milk Cellar at Chez Ignorante" written/posted back in 2006. Here's a link to the article where the following edited excerpt is from: "This Chelsea restaurant has gone from brasserie...

gussied-up tabbouleh

When I first became vegetarian, Tabbouleh was one of the few dishes in my culinary repertoire. Think about it: Tabbouleh is a classic for a reason—it’s simple to make, and damn tasty – showcasingzippy fresh herbs against sweet and chewy bulgur. It's also frugal and healthy. What more could you ask for?I recently revisited and updated this Middle Eastern staple salad, which I added lemon zest to brighten the flavors and further enhance the dish’s inherent sunniness.

Serious Salt: Heart Attacks & Strokes

"What will it take to get Americans – and the food industrial complex – to get serious about taking some of the salt out of our diets?... In January, another study published in the New England Journal of Medicine concluded...

it's starting to feel like spring!

these past few days it's been a whole lot warmer - it actually feels like spring here in rva, and we couldn't be more happyfaced about it! it's a much needed break from the cold and rainy stuff. we hope everyone else has had some spring-like awesomeness, too. :) this past weekend was packed full, but really fun! it started off with running in to Jes (from Cupcake Punk) at pine street barber shop. squeeeeeeeeeeeee!
